Department of Chemistry


About the Department

            The department of Chemistry is one of the earliest departments in the college. On 28.07.1967 a separate building for the chemistry department was inaugurated  by the honourable chief minister Aringar C. N. Annadurai M.A. on the bank of river Arasalaru. B.Sc., Chemistry was started in the year 1968 with 30 students in English medium and 24 students in Tamil medium.
            Over the years, it has grown remarkably both in term quality and recognition. The Department has earned a name and reputation for its academic excellence in the field of chemistry.   As a result, this department has introduced post graduate programme, M.Sc., in the year 2005 – 06 and Ph.D., in the year 2011 – 12.
            Ms. P. Vimala (late) was the principal of college during 13.07.1972 to 27.02.1979; the Allied lab was introduced in her period. She was responsible for the improvement of the department. “Vimala Memorial Prize” is distributed to the students who get first rank in the practical.
            The department is rich in infrastructure and modern equipments like Double Beam UV Spectrophotometer, Photo Reactor, Flame Photometer, Auto clave, Muffle Furnace, Mechanical Shaker, Digital Photo Electric Calorimeter etc.,
The Curriculum required for both UG & PG programme have been designed by the staff members and sent for the approval of the board of studies and academic council. The curriculum is designed in such a way to suit the needs of present trends in the field of chemistry. The curriculum also is subject to review by the academic council to include the latest development in the field of chemistry.
The changes are made then to reflect the present changes in the subjects. As a part of course curriculum, the post graduate students are required to do the project work in various field of chemistry and submit the same in the form of project report at the end of the final semester. These reports are evaluated by the internal and external examiners and they are awarded with marks.
            The department has produced number of university rank holders, most of old students are working in various departments like collector office, college, schools, bank, police department, revenue department, post office, panchayat union office, industry & pharmaceutical companies etc.,
            The entire credit goes to the staff members worked and working in the department, they help the students in every possible way with their able guidance and unstinted cooperation.
            The department library is well equipped with 1809 books on general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, agricultural chemistry, phyto chemistry and food & nutrition etc., Journals such as Indian Journal of Chemistry A, Indian Journal of Chemistry B and Asian Journal of Chemistry are subscribed.  The staff members, research scholars and students are allowed to make use of the library books.
            The evaluation committee from Bharathidasan University appreciated specially the formation and the maintenance of chemistry department.
