About the Department

            In the year 1965-1966 B.A. History has been introduced and started functioning. From that year onwards “ The History Major” occupied a prime position which increased the admission of a large number of students considerably every year.

            In the year 1967-1968,  then government wished to introduce Tamil as medium of instruction in the degree course, and it was implemented in the same year. Since 1967, we have parallel medium of instruction in Tamil and English B.A. degree course and Sanctioned strength for English medium is 45 and for Tamil medium is 50. Recognizing the need for additional demand for B.A, an additional batch has been added from the year 2007- 2008 under shift II. From August 2005, the P.G. Course in History ( Self finance) was started with 24 students and Subsequently the strength was increased from the Academic year 2008.

Curriculum Design

            The curriculum required for both UG and PG programme have been designed by the staff members and finalized by the Board of Studies and approved by the Academic council.   The curriculum is designed in such a way to suit the needs of present trends in the field of History. The changes are made then and there to reflect the present changes in the subjects. As a part of course curriculum, the post graduate students are required to undergo the project work in any  area of studies of Historical Importance and submit the same at the end of the fourth semester. These reports are to be  evaluated by both  the internal and external examiners.
